I recently visited my village in the interiors of Uttar Pradesh after a gap of nearly 10 years. But I was surprised to see the development. It is a small village with a population of around 1000. One of the most astonishing things was the infrastructure development. When I left my village it had hardly 4-5 concrete houses. Today every other house is a 2 story building with great front designs and vibrant colors.
We are one of the few who had this old or traditional village house design then. I decided to do a renovation and started looking for simple and low cost village house designs. In my research, I found some key elements which should be considered when you are planning for a low cost house design in your village.
Gone are those days when village houses symbolized mud walls, thatched & tiled roofs, wooden floors, stone walls, open courtyards, etc. Today’s village houses have transformed from rustic charm to modern concrete designs. Traditional village house designs were inspired by local climate, materials, and cultural practices.
As transportation and communication improved with time modern house designs replaced traditional designs. Changing demographics brought urban influence to villages. This is giving rise to the modern architectural trends in houses in villages. People in villages now prefer concrete buildings, better designs, landscapes, and modern aesthetics.
While doing my research for a simple village house design in India, I came across some of the important elements that are necessary to consider. These elements are key to the design of a simple yet modern house design. These key elements are
The first and foremost thing is to hire an architect for a house design. Unlike urban areas, you can easily get a low budget house design in a village. You need to give them your land details, your preferences, the number of rooms, and any other additional information. Based on these details local architects will prepare a house design ready for construction. Some of the tips to consider here,
The front design is the face of the house, so don’t neglect it while you design and construct. The entrance door is a key element of the front design. A centered entrance with large ornamental, or carved or floral doors works like a showstopper.
A verandah or covered front porch spanning the width of the house is typical. It acts as a shaded outdoor space for multiple purposes. Apart from this one can also use overhangs, wall decor, hanging plants, brick, stone, or stucco finish on the exterior walls. Using a symmetrical and balanced composition on both sides of the central entrance improves the overall look of the house.
One of the most neglected things while constructing a house is the selection of colors. The outdoor color combination really matters as they are like the face of the house. Some of the common mistakes people commit while painting the house are such as Wrong color combinations, too bright colors, and dark shade colors without any contrast.
Instead, use the correct combination of colors to enhance the image of your house. If you are constructing a house in a limited space then choosing light tone colors can give a feeling of an increase in the size of the house.
Some of the popular and smart choices of color combinations for the front of a house are Peach & White, White & Blue, White & mustard Yellow, White & Ash Gray, etc.
One of the greatest advantages of getting a house design from an architect is the utilization of spaces. My old house in the village has a kitchen which is 3 times the size of my bedroom in the city. A house design will utilize each square foot of the space optimally. Based on your preferences they will design a house that will have maximum space utilization. Opt for adaptable spaces that can be used for multiple purposes.
Include a small garden or lawn at the front of the house that gives a modern look to the house. Landscaping is a new concept but is fast to be adopted in villages. These give an outstanding look to the normal house front elevation designs in villages.
In typical Indian village house design, the requirement of storage areas is paramount. These designated storage rooms or areas are required to store grains, vegetables, and other products.
Build your home with an incremental approach in phases as needs grow and budgets allow. Start with just the essentials and limit expensive finishes.
Incorporate multifunctional spaces rather than too many separate rooms. An open central living space can host different needs. These spaces can be used for hosting rituals, small gatherings, or storing goods.
Last but not least a budget assessment is crucial while building a house. You must be wondering if this is crucial why did I keep it to the last, that is because budget was the least priority for me. But this will not be the same for everyone. Always determine the budget for the construction of the house beforehand and finance accordingly.
From my experience, I can definitely tell building a house in a rural village comes with many challenges. But with careful planning, creativity, and resources it can be achieved within a modest budget. The key is to work within the limitations of materials, and skills available locally.
By focusing on necessities, adopting an incremental approach, and incorporating a professional house design, a simple low budget house design in the village is entirely possible.
What are the main characteristics of village home design?
Specific characteristics will also depend on the local climate, culture, and preferences of the inhabitants. Collaborating with local architects and communities can further enrich the design process.
